Overview

At Nanananasai, the annual festival hosted by 100BANCH, we ran the first field trial of Cocoreach Inc.’s LUMION. It was the first touchstone: collecting biometric data outside the garage, from visitors we had never met.

Record of the day

We brought the emotion-recognition module and the heart-rate measurement module to a state where visitors could wear them at the venue. There were two things to verify: whether we could stably capture heart rate and skin conductance from real visitors, and how accurately emotions could be read from the captured data.

On the day in July, we ran both modules in a venue of around 3,000 people and collected data with the cooperation of visitors. The result: the data came through stably. At the same time, problems that had never surfaced in the garage took concrete shape. Signals were easily disturbed by variation in how the devices were worn, the airwaves grew congested when people crowded together, and explaining and fitting took twice as long as expected.

The problems found on site fed straight into the development plan that followed. We addressed the noise by implementing a custom filter, and the radio congestion by studying a move to the 920MHz band. The next trial, at a larger scale, also starts from the measurements taken that day.

For a first trial the results were solid, and at the same time we could list, in concrete terms, the problems that only a real environment reveals. I will not forget the feeling of the moment when real visitors wore the devices and the data arrived in our hands. It was the day LUMION started growing into a tool that holds up in a real venue.
